It turns out that Smokey Yunick's adiabatic engine did its magic by vapourising the gas:

of course the fuel vapour systems is definately the way to go along with HOH etc.  All engines are GAS engines. They were never designed to have liquid fuel flood into them so the more we can do to turn any liquid fuel into gas the better we can get our engines to perform and clean up the air.

What was special about the toilet roll was that it was tightly wound and 2 ply.

Toilet rolls filter down to 1/10 of a micron according to Trasko who still make a spin on filter for modern cars that contains a “woven” filter (aka dunny roll).

AKT was an Australian company that used to make spin on oil filters containing a dunny roll. They had a factory in Dandenong. I'd really like to know where they went because I was a very keen user of these filters… and now have to import from the US. The toilet rolls they used were Sorbent two ply.

I still have a Franz bypass filter which I never fitted. Must get around to it some day… just waiting for the right car (needs a bit of space in the engine bay).

All these filters have a much greater carrying capacity than the normal filter. That means they can be left on for two or three oil changes.

Most of these filters also have extra fins on the outside and improve cooling quite substantially.

The Franz filters were great as well for the bypass oil filtration. Never change the oil, only the toilet roll ( special toilet roll) and cleaned down to 5 micron from memory. Sadly this system has gone by the wayside as well.

I still have some of the Super Igniter plugs of various types in stock. Mostly the weird ones… but if someone really wants to try one I'm sure I could be persuaded to part with some of them for a relatively modest sum.

On plugs I used to sell the Super Igniter range which had a 360 deg horizontal spark so that the usual probe did not interfere with the spark and fuel mixture. These plugs lasted the 100km but sadly when the inventor retired in England, no one wanted to take on the production of these plugs. Many of the multi probe plugs do not have the advantage of the 360 deg lateral spark.

Over the years I have tried many products. One of the stop gaps has been the Nulon range of products. In my wife's Proton which has a Mitsubishi engine, the gear box has been rebuilt twice and was looking like a third time as it went into its shudder mode when changing down. Seems they don't have sufficient cooling for summer periods as well. I added the Auto gear box additive and it has not shuddered since. In the engine I have always used the E30 as it is a good insurance. The marketing spin was that you could travel from Melbourne to Sydney without oil as it left a micto film of Teflon on all engine parts. I have not tried to do this but at all the shows there was usually a stand with a motor running wihout the sump on to demonstrate the wonders of this product. The E20 I have used in older smokey engines.  ESPI was also a marvel oil additive and was great in high stress gear systems. It greatly reduced friction and extended gear life in heavy industrial applications.

Yes it is good to maximise the engines performance in all these respects. The work that Marek and co are doing is great as the ignition system can be greatly improved upon with multi spark and plazma spark systems and of course the fuel vapour systems is definately the way to go along with HOH etc.  All engines are GAS engines. They were never designed to have liquid fuel flood into them so the more we can do to turn any liquid fuel into gas the better we can get our engiones to perform and clean up the air. All the government has to do is charge the CSIRO or any research group to dig out some patents and develop any of the thousands of ideas and we could have clean burning engines and even new engines in hardly any time at all. BUT THEY don't want real solutions. They just want BIG governments and costly regulations and half baked solutions. The present Carbon Tax ideas are a sham and insult to the problems. We have always had climate change and we wont stop that but we should stop the pollution what ever the situation with the climate. It seems we give no thought for civilization on the planet in a hundred years time let alone 500 years time. At the present rate of resource consumption there wont be anything left. We are using all precious metals at a staggering rate and we just can't keep doing this. The fundamental problem is the GROWTH ECONOMIC MODEL. We need an economic model that is not reliant on growth, and a money system that is not a debt system. Social Credit is one alternative and there are other models that could be adopted. It would be a good time for Iceland to try something new as they have been wiped off the economic map.

I wish Rudd would learn from Chifley when it comes to money matters as we financed many Capital works debt free and the war was also debt free.Ther trans National rail link was built debt free. IT CAN BE DONE FOLKS….NO MAGIC!! He can use our own sovereign banking system to pay for all the infrastructure works instead of selling us out to the foreign banking mafia. He is no more lanour than the libs. All part of the rich boys club.  Mark Latham had abit to say about the systemic rot in the labopur party andf sadly he has been proved right. Is there one captain of industry in the Caninet and the same question can be asked of Obama as well? Any one with real business experience? I doubt it. All madmen in a lolly pop shop when they could have used the billions to set up all kinds of alternative technology industries, water proofed the country, and much more, but we have nothing to show for the billions. I can't believe the madness these idiot s are embarking upon.  So many opportunities lost.  So guys it is up to out humble little group to test the fringe technologies and come up with some real solutions. The system is totally dead and ignorant. I hope we can move forward and get some base line data on the various test engines we now have and build our knowledge on fuels and fuel systems that can give us the economy we need to survive and cleaner emissions. Green diesel is one such technology we really look forward to and all the work that we as individuals are pursuing. We can be proud or the knowledge base we now have as I think we do have something very special but we do need more bums off seats and into the work shop. So much needs to be done. Fuel vapour systems need to be built, several HOH systems built and tested. Each of has can make a difference, collectively a HUGE difference   Thanks for the rant… Ian

The club efforts have often been directed to improving fuel efficiency… but making vehicle engines (and other parts) last longer is also a worthy topic… as it decreases the use of energy ie. energy is used to produce both new parts and repair old ones. If you don't have to do this as often it's an energy saving. This also means it saves money.

It also needs to be recognised by club members that there are a number of products that you can buy off the shelf that will do these things. Nothing special is required… other than the knowledge that they work… and the willingness to invest in them.

As longevity is also linked to fuel efficiency… you also get an added bonus with most of these things ie. you also use less petrol at some stage in the life cycle.

Products that fall into these categories include:

Better air filtration eg. foam filtration (very cost effective and very large carrying capacity), nano fibres (touted as the next big thing) and passing air through an oil bath. Because these filters mostly breathe better than the standard air filter they can often improve economy… especially if the engine has breathing related difficulties.

Better oil filtration: if you can remove the wear particles from the oil the engine will last much longer. Filters with removable woven cellulose filters (aka dunny rolls) filter ~400 times better than the standard oil filter.

Long life spark plugs… not only do they last up to 100,000kms but they usually burn better… improving economy eg. Iridium plugs

It is also possible to treat the metal in an engine with a polymer to reduce friction. The treatment is permanent and apart from improving economy increases engine life… and is very well tested.

You will find details and descriptions of the first 3 products in the links section of http://www.xcelplus.com.au and the last one is the subject of the site itself.

It would be nice if other members posted details of products they know do work… especially if they can be fitted to the vehicles we drive… even better if they don't require a lot of time to fit and special know-how.

I believe products other than the ones I have mentioned exist… and would like to know about them. Could other people please post some stuff?

If I understand the ICE project correctly… then to consider some of these possibilities is within the scope of the project.

:-)

BTW: Better oil filtration will roughly double your engine life, better air filtration will roughly double your engine life and better (permanent) lubrication will double your engine life. I've never quite worked out if that means the engine will last 8x as long as all those things work synergistically… but engine life is definitely significantly improved and cars need a lot less attention.

PS. Some of the successful HOH experimenters are using these methods to augment economy… or in addition to their economy enhancements.
